So your friends have asked you to join their volleyball league, and it sounds like a great time but there’s only one problem: you’ve never played before. Don’t let that hold you back from a good time! Here at Smack Fest, we have players of all levels: beginners, intermediate and advanced. Feeling a little better about it now? We can do you one better, here are all the rules in volleyball. Now you can study up and kill it on that court!
Let’s start with the court. A 2-inch line, or area, that boards the court as an out-of-bounds line. Any ball that touches this area is still considered in-court. In a standard team there are 6 players, 3 in front and 3 in back. For our 4 on 4 teams there will be 2 in front and 2 in back.
Despite the amount of players on your team, or the rules of the league, it is standard that a side can only have contact with the ball three times; a pass, a set and a hit. Also known as bump, set and spike. No one player can ever make contact with the ball twice.
Each play begins with a serve. The server must be behind the line at the back of the court. The serve can be made wherever the server wants, so long as they remain behind the line. When serving, the ball MUST go over the net.
Rotation is always clockwise even though position number is counter clockwise. After each side has served once, and it is your sides turn to serve again, everyone rotates one position to the right. When a player rotates to the back row they can’t go for the ball in the front row.
When the ball makes contact with the floor within court boundaries or an error is made, the team who is not at a fault gets a point, whether they served the ball or not. Whoever earned the point gets the following serve. A standard game goes to the team to score 25 points first, but in our 4 on 4 leagues, we score till 21.
